idea 1: postal idea

idea 2: film collaboration with ECLECTIC

Wednesday 25th Jan: Presentations of proposed project. (3min presentation, hand in 1 page of A4.) Starting point (questions / area you want to investigate.) Method (What you plan to do.) References (Relevant examples of projects.)
Images / diagrams to help illustrate Timeline (rough draft)

so the postal idea... get an object... what object? should it represent anything, should it be relevant to the activity.

Possible ideas for object:
  • stamp- reference to postal system also stamps cost money, but it's not being used as intended so there is a slight irony there?
  • random object- e.g. a rubber duck
  • an object of mine
  • a completely newly formed object... something made, it starts it's journey as this project starts.
  • something old that has the potential of already having many journeys under its belt.
  • an object that represents travel, e.g. a miniature car/ train/ tram/ bicycle/ walking man/ lorry/ tanker/ tank/ monster truck/ unicycle/ motorbike/ ship/ aeroplane
  • it might be better to have an object that looks mundane and unthreatening to the public so they don't feel like they are a participant in a practical joke.
Media of object:
  • not something that is delicate as lots of people might be handling it e.g. wax sculpture/food
  • some thing hard and durable e.g. wood, metal, plastic, solder
Scale of object:
  • a size that fits in the hand
  • slightly bigger so they will have to 'carry' it- advantage will be that it will be visible in the film.
  • massive- no (i think more people would object to partake in the activity)
Possible (initial) problems with project and solutions to correct them:
  • Because it is with the public there is no guarantee that anyone will collaborate/partake in this game. it will take persuasion techniques- e.g. explaining the game really fast and precise, be polite. maybe organise a group of people say 10? and go for a walk, starting with person number one holding the object standing at the front of the group and going where they like, and then person number 2 repeating etc. the only problem is that if i get a group of people.. i am choosing who will be there in the first place and these people might know each other and might go to similar places around leeds. if i choose, it limits the variation of people i have in my project. which in turn will change the results i get out of it.
  • alternative... ask people where they are going on route (take a map around, and get them to mark it where they are and where they are going, then go where they are going and pick up another participant to do the same.
  • someone might run away with the object if it is valuable
How do i get people to participate?
  • wear a big sign saying 'please partake in my project'
  • offer them something in return? free exhibition... i could post them the results etc
where should it start?
  • maybe i could be the first participant, start from my house and go where i like....
  • the centre of leeds- there will be more people about to ask.
  • to some kind of park, where people are there for leisure?

Other ways of documenting the activity:

  • film it
  • leave string wherever we go (like the minotaur)
post activity ideas... what should i do with the geometrical information afterwards?:
  • make an object in the laser cutter in the shape of the route...
  • make an object and information, that i could then give back to the participants.../ exhibition date displaying work i have produced from their journeys and give out the objects there...
  • make jewellery from the shapes, each participants/collaborators route in a different colour/pattern/texture.
  • make sculptures- the same as the jewellery but bigger.
  • make stickers and put them up around leeds.
  • make screen prints.
  • make a thing out of ribbons on the floor/in an outside area of shapes.
  • screen print shapes
example: a map from the city of rome...

idea 2: film collaboration with ECLECTIC.

  • either we could both come up with a project together to do and he/we could make a new song and film to go along with it.
  • i could be influenced by his songs and make a film.
  • i could make a music video to one of his songs
after video:
  • do a screening / projection
  • organise a live gig where the video is projected
  • location?
