Suzannah Evans is a Bank Street resident interested in the poetry of location and mapping. She hopes to investigate the relationship between locations and their maps, and the different aspects that come together to assemble an idea of ‘place’; memories, stories, history, personal myths.

This two hour workshop will form the starting point for a project based around the A-Z map of Sheffield. Artists of all disciplines are welcome; although the workshop will contain written exercises, there is potential to develop the project in any medium you choose.

30   the project   Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? is a project about involving the other asparticipant in a set of protocols indicative of the effects, conditions and possibilities of contemporary art. Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? starts with the offering of a painted steel object (125 x 80 x 18 cm) to be taken home by the participant (individual, group or collective), who will have a certain period of time (around one month) to realize an artistic experience with it. Although the physical object is the actual element which triggers the processes and starts up the experiences, it in fact brings to the foreground certain sets of invisible lines and diagrams concerning all kinds of relations and sensorial data, making visible networking and mediation structures. It is up to the participants to take the decisions of what kind of experience will be enacted, where the object will be taken and how will it be useful, during the time they are in the possession of it. The participants of Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? – individuals or groups – perform experiences from their own proposition and choice that can reflect on life and art issues, regarding the relationship between the subject and the other, conducting to some transformation process. The participants send feedback in the form of texts, images, videos or objects, and the documents will be displayed in a website, especially developed for the project – each participant will have access to editing tools, which will permit them to upload the documentation themselves. Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? was initiated in 1994 and has already circulated through several cities, from London (UK) and San Sebastián (Spain), in Europe, to Rio de Janeiro, Vitória, Brasília, São Paulo, Porto Alegre and Florianópolis, in Brazil. More than 30 participants (some of them, groups and collectives) have produced several experiences and an extensive and interesting documentation – which is displayed at the project website. Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? is clearly a piece of work-in-progress, as it finds its way in the very process of being developed. Virtually, this project has no near end at all, since its continuity does not depend on its author/proposer lifetime – the object is conceived as a multiple, and so new objects can be produced any time it is required. The object used at Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? has its shape designed according to the NBP - New Bases for Personality project, an on-going project comprising drawings, diagrams, objects, installations, texts and manifestos, initiated in the 1990s. The NBP project connects contemporary art’s practices and concepts to communicational strategies, getting in touch with some of the recent developments on the politics of subjectivity. NBP’s specific shape was designed to be as easily memorizable as its sign: after experiencing any NBP work the viewer leaves with NBP and its specific shape in his or her body – a kind of implanted or artificial memory, as the result of a subliminal sensorial contamination strategy. NBP project addresses transformation, as it is meant to transform itself as a result of its history and process. the collaboration with documenta 12 For documenta 12, twenty new objects were produced. Ten of them circulate in Brazil and Latin America, nine in Europe and one in Africa. The project is conducted in four different and complementary stages: (1) invitation to participate; (2) experiences by the participants; (3) display of the experiences at the website; (4) installation-exhibition. The first three stages are performed since the objects are distributed at the experiences’ sites, and start circulating; the fourth stage takes place with the display of the results in an sculptural-architectonic installation developed for the exhibition in Kassel in June 2007.
